90th Anniversary of Estonian Republic

Dear visitor!

Welcome to the homepage of the 90th Anniversary of the Republic of Estonia. Here you can find information on the celebrations and events taking place during the anniversary year.

The anniversary year of the Republic of Estonia began on 28 November 2007, when 90 years passed from the decision of the democratically assembled representative body of the Estonian people, the Land Council, to declare itself as the highest power in Estonia.

The anniversary year ended after exactly one year, on 28 November 2008, when 90 years had passed from the first battle of the War of Independence and 91 years from the historical resolution of the Land Council.

The celebrations of the anniversary year between these two dates were based on the idea “A country built together,” which was aimed at encouraging all Estonian people to rejoice in their country and carry it forward.

The anniversary year of the Republic of Estonia was divided into topical months, according to the spirit of the Constitution and some significant events in the history of Estonia, such as the War of Independence, the Estonian school, exile, resistance and restoration of independence, and different peoples living in Estonia.

In total, almost 1000 events were organised during the anniversary year in Estonia and almost 200 other countries. All events dedicated to the anniversary of the Republic of Estonia are worth mentioning, but the anniversary year will definitely be remembered by the voluntary cleaning campaign “Let’s do it,” the night-time song festival “A time to notice”, the grand exhibition “The will to be on our own” by the Estonian History Museum and the grand project “Back to Vargamäe” by the Estonian theatres, in the framework of which all parts of “Truth and Justice,” a novel by Tammsaare, were performed.

It would not have been possible to organise the events of the anniversary year without the help of the people of Estonia.

Today, the celebrations of the 90th Anniversary of the Republic of Estonia will end with a festive ceremony at the Estonia Concert Hall. ETV will show a live broadcast of the event beginning at 19.00. President Toomas Hendrik Ilves will thank all of the people who have contributed to the success of the anniversary year across Estonia.

On Wednesday, 26 November, on the occasion of Citizens’ Day, the ministries and the State Chancellery will invite all interested people to learn about their work. Visitors can listen to several lectures, view exhibitions, meet the ministers and chancellors and participate in debates.
